MOT rules in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland's tests are run by DVA rather than DVSA. Test results from 2017 onwards appear in the online record, but without the individual defects and advisories.

Who runs the test

Vehicle testing in Northern Ireland is carried out by the Driver and Vehicle Agency at its own test centres, rather than at private garages as in Great Britain. Vehicle registration itself moved to DVLA in Swansea in 2014.

What the record holds

Northern Irish results appear in the MOT history record from 2017 onwards. The result, the date and the mileage are held. The individual defects and advisories are not, so a Northern Irish test shows no defect list at all. That is missing data, not a clean sheet.

Reminders

The GOV.UK text and email reminder service does not cover Northern Ireland. DVA send a postal reminder before the test is due instead.
